Sunday June 25th, 2017 began rather cloudy with a somewhat chilly wind for the time of year but, thankfully, it remained dry for the large number of golfers who turned out for the Captains Day of Dr. John Mc Hardy at Donegal Golf Club. The course itself was in immaculate condition for the day, a compliment to the diligent efforts of our Greens staff, and the approximately 200 golfers who participated on the day were fulsome in their praise of the state of the course. Indeed, the number of golfers who were in attendance for the competition, and the distinguished guests who joined them for the day, was testament to the high regard in which our esteemed current Captain, John, is held.
The breeze and, more pointedly, the somewhat heavy rough wreaked havoc with many a promising card, but, as always, some players handled the conditions better than others. The eventual winner was the hugely popular Donegal postman John Mc Intyre, playing off a handicap of 16, who carded a fine 41points. Close behind- and playing in the same four-ball- with a card of 40 points, was fellow ‘postie’ Michael Martin, playing off a handicap of 14.. Indeed, both players attributed their outstanding success to the encouragement and mentoring of another member of their fourball – the legendary Francie Brogan! In third place, with a very respectable score of 37 points, was the evergreen William ‘Billy’ Johnston, playing off 10, while the Gross prize was taken by Darren Mc Daid, playing off 2, with an excellent effort of 31 points. A full list of prize winners is as follows:

In keeping with the activities of earlier in the day, the Captain’s Dinner in the Clubhouse on Sunday evening was very well attended and proved to be another outstanding success. The music was provided by "Skirmish" with a few contributions by guests thrown in and all in attendance thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Most, if not all, of the prize winners were present to accept their hard –earned laurels and the Captain, in his speech paid tribute to the efforts of all who played or otherwise contributed to the highly successful occasion that was Captain’s Day 2017 at Donegal Golf Club.
